The Northern Deanery Steering Committee launched a new Development subcommittee in early May with a gathering of parents, priests, and community members. The newly formed team committed to two key development goals: 1) raise awareness about the high school, and 2) build community support for both enrollment and funding.

One of the first steps for the new subcommittee will be connecting with current Assumption and ICRS 6th and 7th grade parents to share information about the high school, answer questions, and identify interested startup families. These meetings are coming soon and will inform crucial decisions related to both location and timeline.

El Comité Directivo del Decanato Norte puso en marcha un nuevo subcomité de Desarrollo a principios de mayo con una reunión de padres, sacerdotes y miembros de la comunidad. The Northern Deanery Catholic High School’s mission is to inspire learners to encounter Christ, critically engage important ideas, and apply their gifts for the good of the world.

This mission statement was designed to imbue deep purpose and meaning.

Inspire learners: The Latin root of inspire, inspiratus, means “to breathe into,” reflecting the Holy Spirit’s guidance. Students will be encouraged to embrace curiosity, ask questions, and engage wholeheartedly in their educational journey.

Encounter Christ: This school’s ultimate hope is for students to meet the Lord, personally experience His greatness, and deepen their relationship with Him.

Critically engage important ideas: Learning goes beyond memorization. The educational goal is for students to actively engage with ideas, integrate them into their lives, and bring them into the world with conviction.

Apply their gifts for the good of the world: This school will nurture the next generation of faithful citizens, leaders, and change-makers, serving as the launchpad for their greater purpose.

We continue our blog series sharing findings from the Northern Deanery High School 2024 feasibility study.

The 2024 feasibility study conducted by the Meitler consulting group gathered feedback from over 360 Northern Deanery families regarding two potential sites for a new Catholic High School: South Bellingham and Burlington.

The study found both locations evenly matched in terms of projected enrollment and willingness to commute. Most respondents also indicated a preference for a commute time of 30 minutes or less. Based on these findings, Meitler recommended that the committee explore offering bus transportation to help reduce travel time.

In addition to the survey results, financial projections and property assessments are also playing a key role in guiding the decision around site location for the proposed school.

We are excited to share that the Steering Committee for the Northern Deanery High School project has chosen an Archdiocesan board model for the school’s governance.

This decision means the school will operate as a regional high school, working closely with the Archdiocese Office of Catholic Schools and following their policies.

Our next step is to identify potential board members for review. It has been determined that at least one board member will be a pastor, and additional members will represent the diverse Catholic community across the Northern Deanery counties. The Archbishop will have final approval of the board members.

Although there is still much to be done, including receiving the Archbishop’s final approval, this decision marks a significant step forward in the potential launch of a new Catholic high school in the Northern Deanery.

Nos complace comunicarles que el Comité Directivo de Escuela Prepatoria Católico del Decanato Norte ha elegido un modelo de consejo arquidiocesano para el gobierno de la escuela.

Esta decisión significa que la escuela funcionará como una escuela secundaria regional, trabajando en estrecha colaboración con la Oficina de Escuelas Católicas de la Arquidiócesis y siguiendo sus políticas.

We continue our biweekly series sharing findings from the Northern Deanery High School 2024 feasibility study.

Understanding population growth trends is essential for effective school planning. To assist the Northern Deanery in grasping these trends in our area, the Meitler Consulting Group analyzed data from various local, state, and federal sources.

The positive news is that the school-age population has been growing in our target counties (Whatcom, Skagit, Island, and North Snohomish) since 2010. Although there is a slight decline in growth rates in the short term, we expect growth to pick up again beginning in 2030.

The data also reveals strong overall growth in the region through 2050, driven by an influx of new residents. Whatcom County, in particular, is projected to experience the largest population growth both overall and in the 15–17-year-old age bracket.

With the region’s growing population and heightened parental interest in our schools, we are optimistic as we continue to research the possibility of a Catholic high school in the Northern Deanery.

Northern Deanery Catholic High School Steering Committee member Kali Ortiz is exemplifying her Catholic faith through a dedication to education.

A 2014 alumna of Immaculate Conception Regional School in Mt Vernon, Kali recently shared her educational journey with over 1,200 supporters at the January 31st Fulcrum Foundation Celebration of Light dinner.

As a Fulcrum tuition assistance recipient during her grade school years, Kali went on to earn her Masters degree and now has her sights set on a PhD in education. She expressed deep gratitude to Fulcrum and its donors, stating, “I see a lot of my dreams as a collective because it’s not just my dreams, but dreams of my family and community and the needs of people who look like me.”

That amounts to families with 567 school-aged children spread throughout Whatcom, Skagit, Island, and North Snohomish counties.

Father Jeffrey Moore (Dean of the Northern Deanery, Co-chair of the ND High School Steering Committee, and Pastor of Whatcom Catholic) recently gave a presentation on the proposed high school to both of our regional K-8 Catholic school communities. Parents and parishioners attended these information nights at Assumption Catholic School-Bellingham in November and again at Immaculate Conception Regional School-Mount Vernon in early January.

The Northern Deanery High School Steering Committee took a much-needed summer break and has started to regroup ahead of the next planning phase.

Before the break, the consulting firm Meitler completed and presented a demographic feasibility study to both the committee and our partners at the Fulcrum and Ferry Foundations. The study contained a lot of nuanced data, but the key findings were: (1) we can likely recruit about 20-30 students for our first class, (2) tuition per student will likely be 10–15% of median family income, and (3) the Bellingham and Burlington locations are equally matched in terms of interest and available resources. These results indicate that a sustainable, long-term high school is feasible, but it will require effort.

Following these results, the committee voted to proceed with Meitler’s Phase 2 project, which will provide a suggested 5-year budget for the proposed school. The Steering Committee also voted to create a property sub-committee tasked with investigating possible short- and long-term options for location.
